A magical motorsport weekend unfolded at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez as Lewis Hamilton successfully secured his first-ever pole position with Scuderia Ferrari. The seven-time world champion delivered a stellar performance in the qualifying session, edging out his former Mercedes teammate, George Russell, by a minuscule margin of just 0.009 seconds. This remarkable feat not only extended his career-record tally to 105 pole positions but also marked his first since the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix prior to his high-profile switch to the Maranello squad.

“It's an amazing feeling,” Hamilton told Sky Sports. “Firstly, a big, big thank you to my family. I really wouldn't be here without them. I texted my mum today, 11-11, what the tattoo is, her birthday. And every time I see 11-11 on my phone, it reminds me that I got to text her and yeah, I came in this weekend with a different approach.”
The strategic shift for the British driver involved arriving at the circuit as early as Wednesday, a habit he had never practiced before. This proactive step allowed the team to thoroughly dissect previous weekends where promising practice pace failed to translate into qualifying results. Detailed analysis was poured into wind direction, tire behavior, and track temperature drop-offs to nail the narrow operating window required for the compound.

“I came here on Wednesday, which I never ever do. But we really wanted to kind of look at where we've been the last few races, where it's kind of gone wrong, where we can improve,” Hamilton added. “We made a slight tweak to how we worked this weekend. I really felt all weekend that we had the possibility of competing in the front.”
This triumph serves as redemption for Ferrari following several missed opportunities in recent grands prix, such as Austin. Last weekend, the Scuderia dominated practice sessions through Charles Leclerc and Hamilton, only to under-deliver in qualifying due to sudden tire struggles amidst dropping track temperatures.

“I knew all weekend that I had the pace to be on pole,” Hamilton stated during the press conference. “But these sessions were just up and down. Obviously, Charles was very, very quick. I think the key is getting the tyres working. You see us all go out and it looks like we're doing okay, but the tyres operate in a very small window where they're good, and then they overheat. I'm really perfecting that.” The milestone brings him full circle, realizing his childhood dream of emulating Michael Schumacher in red.
