The Century Long History of Mercedes Benz and Vatican Papal Cars

The enduring partnership between Mercedes-Benz and the Vatican spans nearly a century, showcasing a lineage of iconic vehicles designed to transport the leaders of the Catholic Church. This historic relationship dates back to 1930 when Pope Pius XI was presented with a luxurious Nurburg 460 limousine by Daimler-Benz AG, marking the very first time an automobile was regularly utilized by a Pontiff for official duties.

A major design evolution unfolded in 1980 during Pope John Paul II's visit to Germany, where a custom vehicle was engineered utilizing the robust framework of the Classe G. Featuring an elevated seating position and a transparent protective dome with a pearl-gloss finish, the layout was purposefully crafted to ensure the Pontiff remained clearly visible during public appearances while fostering closer direct contact with the faithful crowds.

Throughout subsequent pontificates, this specialized vehicle tradition expanded to include exclusive landaulet models and heavily customized units built upon the platform of the M-Class. The latest milestone in this sustainable journey arrived in 2024 with the introduction of the Vatican's first entirely emission-free papal transport, represented by a specially equipped G 580 electric vehicle.

This extraordinary automotive heritage is currently being celebrated through a special exhibition titled Un secolo di Papamobile, hosted inside a glass pavilion situated within the Vatican's Giardino Quadrato. Running until January 31, 2027, the exhibition features eight distinct Mercedes-Benz vehicles that vividly map out the chronological evolution of papal transport across multiple generations.

Alongside these legendary papal carriers, the display also incorporates the pioneering Benz Patent-Motorwagen from 1886 and the modern Classe S, connecting historical milestones to 140 years of continuous engineering innovation from the celebrated German automotive brand.
