The Australian Grand Prix weekend at Phillip Island turned into a complete disaster for the world's largest motorcycle manufacturer, following a cascade of setbacks inside the garage. After it was confirmed that the factory Honda squad would be missing Joan Mir, Luca Marini was also forced to sit out due to a viral infection, leaving Johann Zarco as the sole beacon of hope to salvage the manufacturer's pride on Saturday.

The French veteran wasted no time finding his footing in the wet morning conditions. Securing fifth place in FP2, the LCR Honda rider carried that momentum brilliantly into Q2, locking out a sensational spot on the front row for the race start.

When the final Phillip Island MotoGP sprint got underway, Zarco immediately established himself in the lead battle. Motivated from the off, he applied pressure on Alex Marquez before engaging in a fierce scrap for fifth position against KTM spearhead Pedro Acosta.

However, that promising duel was cut short on lap four when Zarco was forced to roll to a halt and park his RC213V machine. The experienced rider did not take long to explain the root cause of the unexpected retirement.

«The problem was a broken sensor in the gearbox area. As a result, the electronics could no longer determine which gear I was in. The gearbox worked mechanically, but the electronic control did not. That is a real problem with complex electronics that also take care of traction and engine braking. The bike also felt strange,» Zarco explained.

The situation quickly became untenable for the seasoned competitor. «When none of that plays together anymore on a bike with that much power, then it also becomes dangerous,» he added, expressing clear regret after taking major risks in qualifying just to fight at the front.

Zarco had also gambled on a medium front tire exclusively for the 13-lap sprint, while the rest of the grid opted for the soft compound. «The idea was to push hard right at the start. It was risky, and while I don't know how it would have ended, I believe a duel with Acosta for fifth place would have been possible,» he concluded.
