The dramatic heartbreak that snatched away a certain victory at the Bathurst 1000 has been officially traced back to a technical glitch in team software. Team 18 owner Charlie Schwerkolt confirmed that an issue within the fuel strategy software was entirely to blame for the race-ending stoppage on the final lap.
Victory was agonizingly slipped away from Anton De Pasquale and Lee Holdsworth after the #18 Chevrolet Camaro ran completely dry meters away from glory. Capitalizing on the sudden misfortune, Brodie Kostecki of Dick Johnson Racing swept past to claim victory alongside co-driver Todd Hazelwood.
“Team 18 has completed a thorough investigation into the final lap stoppage of the No. 18 DeWalt Racing Chevrolet Camaro while it was in the lead of the Bathurst 1000,” Schwerkolt stated following a comprehensive internal review.

“The investigation identified an issue within the team’s fuel strategy software, which resulted in the final fuel fill being less than the amount required to finish the race. The issue has been resolved.”
Despite intense public scrutiny and immediate questions regarding accountability following the devastating fumble, Schwerkolt firmly ruled out any staff casualties or employee terminations. He emphasized that the team operates under a collective accountability framework.
“This was a team responsibility. No single individual is to blame, and no one is being relieved of their position,” Schwerkolt declared, standing firmly behind his engineering and operational crew.
Furthermore, the team owner addressed the toxicity found on digital platforms, noting that online commentary had crossed acceptable boundaries through unwarranted personal attacks against team members and their families.
“We understand the scrutiny that comes with competing at this level and we don’t shy away from that responsibility. However, we have been disappointed by some of the online reaction, particularly the personal attacks and content from organisations that have a responsibility to encourage a healthy and respectful online community,” he added.
With the investigation concluded and the software bug fixed, attention shifts immediately to the upcoming Supercars Finals Series on the Gold Coast, where the squad aims to regroup and chase championship success.
