Davide Tardozzi did not hide the bitter truth after Ducati's struggles at the Austrian MotoGP. Speaking to GPOne, the Ducati Team Manager admitted that KTM and Aprilia are now ahead, while his riders, Marc Marquez and Pecco Bagnaia, had to fight hard.
“I think our rivals did an excellent job,” Tardozzi said. He highlighted Pedro Acosta's dominance over the weekend despite a crash on Saturday. “Pedro made a mistake yesterday, but I think he was the master of the weekend. Unfortunately, because of that crash, he couldn't take home full points.”
For Tardozzi, the rivals' competitiveness is nothing new. “They have been competitive since the end of last year, and now all riders on that bike can go fast. We have to work to stem this situation and give an extra boost to Marc, Pecco, and the other Ducati riders in the remaining races,” he stressed.
The technical issue experienced by Marc Marquez was a focal point. “Marc stated he had a problem with the brakes. I don't know the details yet, but I'm sure Gigi [Dall'Igna] and the other engineers are already analyzing the data to find out exactly what happened. We trust what Marc told us and will try to identify the problem that limited him. When the situation seemed resolved, in the last laps he again set the same times as at the beginning of the race.”
The failure in Austria cost Ducati many points. “We didn't expect to lose so many points here, but we have to congratulate them. Now it's our turn to react in the next races,” Tardozzi said. He also praised Aprilia, who are now reaping the rewards of their hard work. “Aprilia has worked well and is now harvesting the fruits. The championship is still open.”
Looking ahead to the Asian swing, Tardozzi is cautious. “There are at least a couple of circuits where, if we look back at the recent past, our rivals are much more competitive than us. It won't be easy: the championship remains open, but the situation has become quite complicated,” he added.
On the key to winning the title, Tardozzi quoted a lesson from Casey Stoner. “Consistency, speed, and aggression. We have reached the moment where we must attack. As the great Casey Stoner taught me, the first half of the championship is faced with the head, and the second half with the heart,” he concluded.
