Teemu Suninen's hopes of fighting for victory in WRC2 at Rally Sardinia were dashed after a tyre issue forced him to change a wheel mid-stage. The Finnish driver dropped from the lead to seventh, now nearly three minutes behind the leader.

Suninen was clearly seething inside but remained tight-lipped. The Hankook tyres do not appear to be holding up on Sardinia's gravel. Several other drivers also had their own tyre-related challenges.

“We’re not allowed to talk about those. We had a problem on the stage and had to stop to fix it. After that, we also had to drive in the dust for a while,” Suninen said evasively.

“Otherwise, the afternoon was extremely good. Our performance was at a good level and the car is also very strong. In that sense, I was left with quite a good feeling. Of course it’s frustrating, but there’s nothing you can do about it.”

Despite the large gap, Suninen pointed out that few drivers are likely to get through Saturday without problems either. “My driving is at a good level, but you really have to be extremely careful. Unfortunately, many drivers have had minor challenges. It’s quite a lottery,” Suninen lamented.

“It probably won’t get any easier from here. Absolutely anything can happen. There’s nothing else to do but keep driving,” the Finnish driver continued.

Meanwhile, British driver Gus Greensmith leads WRC2. Roope Korhonen is second, just 2.2 seconds behind Greensmith. Emil Lindholm is third, a little over a minute off the lead.

“The conditions on the second loop suited our car’s set-up better. It was somehow easier to push in the afternoon. The stages were in pretty rough condition. I had to be a little careful about where I placed the front of the car,” Korhonen said.

“We’re still very much in the fight. Tomorrow, we just have to continue as well as possible. We need to think carefully about how to preserve the tyres. Perhaps it’s better to take it easier at times to avoid punctures.”

Six stages are scheduled at Rally Sardinia on Saturday. The rally concludes on Sunday.
