Charles Leclerc has struggled to match Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari this season. Despite a victory at the British Grand Prix that narrowed the points gap, it has now widened again to 36 points. While Hamilton is the only driver to have completed every racing lap of the season, Leclerc has failed to see the chequered flag three times—though he was classified in Barcelona.
A surprising statistic emerges from Lance Stroll. The Aston Martin driver has scored no points and has often been off the pace, yet he has crashed only once in 2026, compared to Leclerc's four incidents. Stroll's sole crash came on lap 60 of the Monaco Grand Prix at Anthony Noghes, where the track surface was breaking up, with visible pickup on his front-right tyre. He insisted it was not a factor, but the evidence suggests otherwise.
Last year, Stroll crashed seven times, including one involving Leclerc at Monaco. This season, his retirements have been mostly mechanical. Leclerc, before Monza, had already crashed in Monaco qualifying, Monaco race (lap 66), and Barcelona qualifying. The estimated repair bills for crash damage tell a telling story: Leclerc's tally stands at a hefty $1.888 million, compared to Stroll's $375k, with the Monza shunt being the second most expensive of the year.
This statistic underscores Leclerc's inconsistency amid intense competition. Ferrari will hope their star driver can bounce back, especially as Hamilton continues to deliver solid results. Whether this is just a bad season or a deeper issue remains to be seen, but Stroll's record—despite his underdog status—serves as a reminder that consistency is key in F1.
