Andrea Stella has strongly condemned Flavio Briatore's allegations that one of the FIA's appeal judges had links to McLaren. The accusations surfaced after the court's decision reinstated Pierre Gasly's lost podium to Isack Hadjar at Monza on Friday (6/9/2024).
During the team representatives' press conference at Monza, Alpine's executive advisor Briatore accepted the ruling but questioned the independence of Filippo Marchino, one of the four judges. Briatore claimed Marchino had connections with McLaren, citing a 2018 speech for McLaren and donations of McLaren cars to his foundation.
"I think it's very unfair. We accept the decision, but what is very strange is that there were four judges, and one of them acted like a prosecutor," Briatore said. "Afterwards, we found out the reason... he is very linked with McLaren."

Stella, seated next to Briatore, responded firmly. "I find this conference is going in a direction that is quite insulting for McLaren, for the reputation of a team that deserves a lot of respect," said Andrea Stella. "If anybody makes these kinds of allegations, which seem quite serious, they are going to have to take responsibility for what they are saying in a public forum. The hearing, the whole International Court of Appeal was conducted to the highest standards."
The court's decision returned Gasly to seventh place, while Isack Hadjar moved up to third and Oscar Piastri to fourth. Gasly had initially lost his Monaco podium due to a pitlane penalty, then regained it through a right of review, before losing it again on appeal.
Stella also stressed that McLaren pursued the appeal to ensure consistency in regulations. "We respect the legal process and believe every team should be treated equally. Such allegations are baseless and damage the credibility of this sport," he added.
Tensions between the two teams are expected to continue for the rest of the season, especially with the tight constructors' championship battle. However, Stella insisted that McLaren will focus on on-track performance rather than off-track drama.
