Formula 1's return to Madrid for the Spanish Grand Prix after 45 years brings a trophy like no other. Named "Monumental," this silver prize is not just a cup but a piece of art crafted by renowned Italian design studio Pininfarina.
Instead of a traditional cup, the trophy draws inspiration from the Monumental corner—the heavily banked turn that defines the Madring circuit. Its curved profile mimics the corner's shape, while the entire track layout is mapped into the structure, with a crimson red detail tracing the racing line. Organizers describe it as the longest banked turn on the F1 calendar.
The trophy was selected from three finalists by a jury including two-time World Rally champion Carlos Sainz, F1 representative Louise Young, Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum artistic director Guillermo Solana, IFEMA Madrid representative Gonzalo Cabrera, and architect Teresa Sapey. It was officially unveiled at Madrid's Palacio de Cibeles ahead of the race weekend.
“Monumental will be more than a trophy: it will be the symbol lifted by the first champion in MADRING’s history and the representation of how we understand victory in Madrid,” said Sainz.
This unconventional design continues a trend after last weekend's Italian Grand Prix at Monza. Pirelli commissioned a trophy for its home race, stacking several cup and bowl shapes vertically to give it an intentionally precarious look. The household-inspired design suited Italian GP winner Kimi Antonelli perfectly. After charging from 19th to a remarkable home victory, the Mercedes driver took advantage of the bowl incorporated into his trophy by eating spaghetti directly from it during celebrations.
The Monumental trophy is more than just a prize; it's a symbol of the new circuit's identity and the racing spirit of Madrid. Blending art, history, and speed, it will be a cherished memento for the inaugural Spanish GP winner at Madring.
