Tensions flared inside the McLaren garage after Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri collided on the final lap of the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix sprint race held under mixed track conditions. The aggressive maneuver at Turn 5 ended the Australian's race on the spot and put the British driver at risk of a post-race time penalty from the FIA stewards.
The dramatic wheel-to-wheel combat peaked during the dying moments of the 20-lap sprint race. Norris launched an inside lunge to snatch a position, but the gap slammed shut faster than anticipated. His desperate attempt to back out of the closing space came too late, resulting in a heavy impact into the right-rear corner of his teammate's car and sending both machines spinning.
The heavy collision instantly eliminated Piastri from the classification with significant rear-end damage, while the sister car salvaged an eighth-place finish, holding off Alpine's Pierre Gasly by a narrow margin. However, that solitary point remains under severe threat pending the official stewards' verdict which could hand the position directly to the chasing Frenchman.
Defending his controversial move after the checkered flag, the British racer maintained that the overtaking opportunity was legitimate. "In the last lap, there was a big opportunity into Turn 5, so I went for it. The gap closed a bit more than I would have liked, and obviously I've had to back out of it because the gap was closing, so I've had to try and avoid the incident," he stated regarding the controversial final lap.
Meanwhile, the team's mechanics faced a frantic two-hour race against the clock to replace a damaged gearbox and repair the chassis ahead of a delayed qualifying session. According to Motorsport.com, the management is understood to hold a differing view on the clash, setting up a tense remainder of the race weekend for the Woking-based outfit.
