The Formula 1 race weekend at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez turned into a bitter pill to swallow for Liam Lawson. The New Zealand driver initially breathed a sigh of relief after posting the eighth-fastest time in qualifying, securing the ninth grid slot. This achievement was warmly welcomed by the team, especially after he already had to accept a one-place grid drop penalty following an earlier free practice incident alongside world champion Max Verstappen.

That initial joy was short-lived as the stewards officially disqualified the driver from the qualifying classification. The harsh penalty was issued after his car was found in breach of technical regulations concerning the deployment steps of electrical power. Stewards Garry Connelly, Loic Bacquelaine, Derek Warwick, and Omar Chavez Jimenez were left with no alternative but to strip him of his lap times due to strict adherence to the rulebook.

Based on the official investigation, the infraction stemmed from timing issues regarding the electrical power tapering during his final Q2 flying lap. Safety regulations strictly prohibit teams from abruptly cutting electrical power to ensure mechanical stability. Ingenious engineers previously discovered loopholes involving gradual power reduction when drivers actively lift off the throttle, but an execution error on his final run triggered the technical violation.

The team attempted to argue before the race officials that no tangible performance advantage was gained from the timing discrepancy. Nevertheless, the regulations remain absolute in top-tier motorsport. When a car fails to comply with technical rules at any given moment during a session, it must be classified as illegal, mandating exclusion from the results.
