Senna Agius Completes 2027 MotoGP Grid, Gonzalez Misses Out

Senna Agius has officially secured the final seat on the 2027 MotoGP grid. The Australian rider will step up to the premier class with Tech3 KTM, partnering Luca Marini, who was already confirmed. This ends a long speculation about who would fill the seat vacated by Maverick Vinales.

Agius won a fierce battle against his Intact teammate Manuel Gonzalez, the current Moto2 championship leader. Tech3 boss Guenther Steiner had stated that the seat was essentially reserved for either Agius or Gonzalez, and the team was in no rush to decide until the middle part of the season unfolded. Ultimately, the decision favored Agius, who is seen as having immense potential.

“We believe Senna has the qualities to make a very strong step into MotoGP,” said Steiner, a former Formula 1 team principal. “He has shown impressive speed and maturity in Moto2, but what really stood out to us was his determination to keep improving and his attitude towards the work required to succeed. We are building a team for a completely new era of MotoGP, and we wanted to combine experience with young talent. Senna represents an exciting part of that future. We know there will be a lot for him to learn but we are ready to support him through that process. We are very pleased to welcome him to Tech3 and look forward to seeing him grow with us.”

The length of Agius’s contract was not disclosed by Tech3; the official announcement only stated that the deal is for 2027. The move to sign an Australian rider is also linked to MotoGP’s push to replace the iconic Phillip Island with a new parklands circuit in Adelaide next year. Having a local rider on the grid is believed to have played a role in Agius’s deal. However, the decision has caused paddock consternation as it comes at the expense of Gonzalez, who currently leads the Moto2 championship.

Gonzalez has won five races this season, compared to Agius’s two, and is on track for the title after being denied last year largely due to technical problems. Whether he wins the championship or not, Gonzalez is likely to remain in the intermediate class. Meanwhile, Tech3’s announcement leaves one big question: where will Honda place Diogo Moreira and David Alonso? Honda has signed both but has yet to decide who gets the factory seat alongside Fabio Quartararo and who takes the LCR ride currently occupied by Moreira.

Only five riders from the current lineup will remain with the same team in 2027—or six if Moreira stays at LCR. The arrival of rookies such as Nicolo Bulega, Dani Holgado, Agius, Alonso, and Ivan Guevara means race winners like Franco Morbidelli, Maverick Vinales, Alex Rins, Jack Miller, and Brad Binder have all lost their places. This marks a massive shake-up in the MotoGP rider lineup, creating new dynamics to watch.
