Filip Salac wasted no time in setting the pace at the Red Bull Ring, breaking the Moto2 lap record with a stunning 1'32.402 to lead the Austrian Grand Prix Practice. The American Racing rider was already challenging for the top spot before unleashing his record-breaking lap, securing a direct spot in Q2.

The session was halted with just four minutes remaining when Barry Baltus crashed, bringing out yellow flags and preventing any late improvements. Salac remained untouchable at the top, with Ivan Ortola finishing second, just 0.097s adrift for QJMotor. Ortola had briefly led the timesheets before the yellow flags, also dipping under the lap record.

Daniel Holgado was third, the best of the Aspar riders, narrowly ahead of Tony Arbolino, who continued his strong form from the first session. Izan Guevara made a late charge to climb from seventh to fifth, finishing as the top Boscoscuro rider for Blu Cru Pramac Yamaha.

David Alonso was pushed back to sixth on the second Aspar bike, while Alex Escrig turned his Friday around to finish seventh for Klint Forward after placing 26th following a fall in FP1. Championship leader Manuel Gonzalez was eighth for Liqui Moly Dynavolt Intact GP, with Celestino Vietti surviving an early gravel excursion to finish ninth for SpeedRS.

Alonso Lopez completed the top ten for Gresini after leading early on. Mario Aji was eleventh for Idemitsu Honda Team Asia, ahead of Senna Agius in twelfth. Daniel Munoz secured thirteenth for Italtrans, with the final Q2 spot going to Jose Antonio Rueda, pushing fellow newcomer Alberto Ferrandez down to fifteenth and into Q1.

The tight margins meant Joe Roberts also missed out on a direct Q2 spot, finishing fifteenth after setting personal best laps towards the end. Aron Canet was the top ELF Marc VDS rider in sixteenth as the team continues to struggle. Marcos Ramirez placed 26th on his wildcard outing with Klint Forward Racing.

Baltus' fall forced Ayumu Sasaki to take evasive action, while his Momoven team-mate Zonta van den Goorbergh was less fortunate, also going down. Luca Lunetta crashed in the same section where Vietti had earlier saved a moment. There was also a technical issue for Garcia, who pulled off track with smoke coming from the rear of his Gresini bike. Angel Piqueras, who received a double long lap penalty for his Misano crash, will have to serve it later as he suffered a right hand fracture in FP1.
