Carlos Sainz faced a bitter reality after the Baku GP qualifying session. The Williams driver was handed a five-place grid penalty for failing to slow down under yellow flags. This penalty drops him from ninth to fourteenth on the starting grid for Sunday's race.
The incident involving Sainz occurred at the end of Q3, specifically at Turn 2 approaching Turn 3. According to the stewards' report, Sainz had been warned by his team over the radio to reduce speed. However, the Spaniard argued that he only slowed his car upon entering Turn 3 and exiting it, believing the car that caused the yellow flag was no longer in the run-off area. The stewards rejected this explanation, as the rules state a driver must slow down in every sector. What aggravated the situation was that in Sector 4, Sainz set his personal best time of the session.
Sergio Perez had a different fate. The Red Bull driver received a three-place penalty for impeding Oscar Piastri in Q1. Despite being warned twice over the radio, Perez slowed his car between Turns 19 and 20 while warming up his tires. As a result, Piastri, traveling at around 300 km/h, had to lift off and change direction. Piastri himself admitted that Perez's maneuver did not cost him significant time, but the stewards still found Checo guilty of impeding.
With this penalty, Perez's starting position swaps with his teammate, Valtteri Bottas, in the penultimate row. Meanwhile, Sainz must start from a much more difficult position, forcing the Williams team to devise an aggressive strategy to secure points. This penalty is clearly a severe blow for both drivers who are fighting to improve their standings.
The stewards' decision immediately sparked reactions from fans. Many highlighted the consistency of rule enforcement, especially regarding yellow flags and impeding. Some argued that non-British drivers tend to be penalized more easily than British drivers. However, regardless of the controversy, this grid change is sure to add drama to the race at the Baku City Circuit, known for its narrowness and demand for high precision.
