Carlos Sainz faced a bitter reality after his impressive qualifying performance for the 2026 Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix was undone by a five-place grid penalty. The Williams driver had earlier made it into Q3 for the first time this season for the Grove-based team, signalling marked improvement following a raft of upgrades brought to Baku.
Sainz delivered a solid session, ending qualifying in ninth place, offering great hope for Williams as they strive to enhance performance. However, a yellow flag incident involving Lando Norris in Q3 changed everything. The McLaren driver went off track, triggering an investigation into Sainz, who was in the vicinity, for failing to slow sufficiently.
The stewards summoned Sainz to provide his interpretation. The official document stated that the Spaniard acknowledged the yellow flags and intended to demonstrate a global reduction in speed across the area. "SAI explained that he intended to demonstrate a reduction in speed across the yellow area as a whole. He stated that he did not consider it necessary to reduce speed on the straight and instead intended to demonstrate his response when approaching and exiting Turn 3. He considered this to be a 'global lift' covering the consecutive yellow sectors," the stewards' document read.
Furthermore, Sainz argued that the car which originally caused the yellow was no longer in the run-off area and he expected the yellow flags to be withdrawn. However, the stewards did not accept this interpretation. They emphasised that where consecutive marshalling sectors are subject to yellow flag conditions, a driver must demonstrate a significant reaction to reduce speed in each individual yellow marshalling sector. A reduction in a subsequent sector cannot retrospectively satisfy the requirement applicable to the preceding yellow sector.
The stewards concluded: "The stewards therefore determine that SAI failed to sufficiently reduce speed under the single yellow flag in Marshalling Sector 4. The standard penalty under the Penalty Guidelines for this infringement during Qualifying is a drop of five grid positions."
Consequently, Sainz will start 14th, with Franco Colapinto elevated to ninth and Oliver Bearman taking the final place in the top 10. This decision certainly hurts Williams, who had shown great potential, but Sainz still has a chance to fight back and score valuable points from an unfavourable position.
