Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Teams head into the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix 2026 at Albert Park, Melbourne, facing significant strategic uncertainty, with a high probability of a Safety Car likely to influence tyre decisions under the new technical regulations.

According to Mario Isola, head of motorsport at Pirelli, most teams could be forced into a two-stop strategy if the race is disrupted. The relatively low pit-stop time loss at Albert Park—estimated at around 20 to 21 seconds—makes an additional stop more viable compared with many other circuits on the Formula 1 calendar.

Under normal race conditions, however, the conventional one-stop approach remains the theoretically fastest route to the chequered flag. With the introduction of new cars and power units in the 2026 season, teams are still learning how best to manage tyre degradation and energy deployment across a full race distance.

Speaking to media, including RacingNews365, Isola confirmed that the default tyre strategy for most teams would likely be a medium-hard combination during the race.

He also indicated that the soft compound could play a role because the performance gap between compounds is relatively small. Pirelli estimates the delta between the tyre options at approximately four to five tenths of a second, meaning the difference between strategies may be minimal and could encourage varied approaches across the grid.

If a Safety Car does appear during the race, Isola expects teams to shift strategies accordingly. The most likely alternatives would include medium-hard-medium or a more aggressive soft-medium-soft approach depending on track position and tyre availability.

One driver who could benefit strategically is Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing. Although the Dutch driver will start from 20th after crashing in qualifying, he retains a wider selection of fresh tyres compared with several drivers ahead of him.

Verstappen still has three new sets of soft tyres, along with two fresh hard compounds and another unused set of mediums. This tyre flexibility could allow Red Bull to experiment with alternative strategies if race interruptions occur.

By contrast, drivers starting nearer the front of the grid do not have the same advantage with fresh soft tyres. Both Mercedes and McLaren drivers retain two new sets of medium tyres and a single fresh set of hard tyres.

Meanwhile, the Ferrari pairing of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton each have only one new set of medium and one new set of hard tyres remaining, potentially limiting their strategic flexibility during the race.

With the combination of Albert Park’s street-circuit characteristics, the likelihood of Safety Car interventions, and the uncertainties surrounding the new generation of Formula 1 cars, tyre strategy is expected to play a decisive role in determining the outcome of the opening race of the 2026 championship.
