The dramatic opening-lap collision at Turn 1 during the Lusail Sprint has ignited a fierce debate across international motorsport paddocks. The high-speed contact between Marc Marquez and Marco Bezzecchi abruptly ended the Italian rider's race and sharply divided television pundits from different broadcast networks.
While some Italian analysts argued that the championship leader was responsible for the crash, former Grand Prix rider and RSI technical commentator Roberto Rolfo offered a starkly contrasting perspective. According to Rolfo, the Aprilia Racing rider took an unacceptable risk by attempting an impossible maneuver where no gap existed.
“Bezzecchi made an overly risky attack in a spot where there simply was no space,” Rolfo stated during his post-race technical analysis for Swiss television.

The eight-time world champion strongly defended his racing line, pointing out that taking unnecessary risks while leading the championship goes against all tactical logic, echoing a similar controversy earlier in the season at Mandalika.
“I have always taken Turn 1 with that exact line. He simply failed to judge how fast he was entering the corner with that trajectory, which in many ways is the same thing that happened in Indonesia,” Marquez explained.
“As the championship leader, I certainly do not go looking for contact, and in any case, it is always the rider following behind who has the complete picture of the situation,” added the Ducati rider, after FIM stewards reviewed the incident and officially took no further action.
