Former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher is set to undergo surgery after sustaining a shoulder injury during Stefan Raab's celebrity jet ski world championship in Duisburg on Saturday. What was meant to be an entertaining evening ended with a hospital visit for the younger Schumacher.
In the individual Speed Duel competition, Schumacher impressed by reaching the grand final, only to be beaten by German circus performer Rene Casselly. Despite the loss, the former F1 star showed he still possesses racing instincts.
The trouble began during the team competition when Schumacher partnered with Stefan Raab. They crashed at a buoy, and after initially climbing back on, Schumacher accelerated before Raab was ready, sending them tumbling into the water again. As Schumacher tried to remount, he felt a sharp pain.
"My shoulder was dislocated when I tried to turn the jet ski around so quickly," Schumacher explained on RTL+. Raab initially didn't realize the severity. "At first I thought nothing had happened, then the jet ski kept going. I was like, 'Ralf, what's wrong?' He said he'd dislocated his shoulder. Then I quickly started waving for help," Raab said.
Further examinations revealed a more serious injury. "It was only a shoulder dislocation, but unfortunately a piece of bone broke off as well," Schumacher said. Consequently, he will need "a small operation" to repair the damage.
Schumacher, now a Sky pundit, thanked the medical team on site and BG Klinikum Duisburg. "A huge thank you to the team who got me out of there so quickly and to the doctor who put my shoulder back in place. It all happened incredibly quickly," he wrote on Instagram.
The incident serves as a reminder that even experienced racers are not immune to risks outside the track. Hopefully, Schumacher recovers quickly and returns to his normal activities soon.
