MotoGP, Sportrik Media - Fabio Quartararo delivered a blunt assessment following a difficult Spanish Grand Prix, as Yamaha continued to struggle for competitiveness in MotoGP 2026.
The 2021 world champion endured a sharp contrast to his previous performance at Jerez. After securing pole position and a podium at the same circuit last year, Quartararo started 17th on the grid this time and finished the race nearly 30 seconds behind race winner Alex Marquez.
Despite Yamaha introducing new components for the Spanish Grand Prix, the Japanese manufacturer showed limited progress in closing the gap to the leading teams. The result further underlined the scale of the technical challenges currently facing the project.

Quartararo made it clear that the issues are not confined to a single area, but instead affect nearly every phase of performance on the bike.
"I struggled with grip and power. There isn’t a single area where we are strong or where I feel comfortable," Quartararo said.
"I don’t feel comfortable when braking, entering corners, mid-corner, accelerating, or even braking again."
He emphasised that attempts to resolve one weakness often lead to another emerging, making overall development inconsistent and difficult to stabilise.
"There are so many areas where we struggle. Even if we solve one problem, another appears."
Quartararo also stressed that he fully understands the extent of the performance deficit, dismissing any suggestion that the issue lies elsewhere.
"I’m not stupid; I know how to ride and how much we are losing. A year ago, I was on the podium. Today, I’m thirty seconds behind."
From a technical perspective, Yamaha has not introduced a fundamentally new engine. Team director Massimo Meregalli confirmed that the engine used remains largely unchanged, with only minor modifications rather than a complete redesign.
In race conditions, Quartararo was the top Yamaha finisher in 14th place, while team-mate Alex Rins crossed the line in 16th. Jack Miller finished 18th after encountering a technical issue, with Toprak Razgatlioglu and Augusto Fernandez completing the order for Yamaha.
The outcome at Jerez highlights the significant challenges Yamaha faces in closing the gap to rival manufacturers. With the season still in its early stages, pressure is mounting on the team to deliver effective technical solutions capable of restoring competitiveness in the 2026 MotoGP championship.
