Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East are once again disrupting the world of motorsport. The Qatar Grand Prix looks set to be axed from the MotoGP 2026 calendar, following the conflict between the United States and Iran that has made security in the region unpredictable. The Lusail round, originally postponed from April, was rescheduled for 6-8 November, but now faces the axe.
The news was first reported by British media outlet The Race, with an official announcement expected within days. If confirmed, MotoGP will not seek a replacement circuit. This would reduce the season from 22 to 21 rounds—a decision that would undoubtedly shake up the title fight.
Interestingly, this contrasts with Formula 1, which had prepared a contingency plan from the start. MotoGP, on the other hand, appears to have no backup. The only option that had been floated was a double-header at Sepang, but that idea seems to have faded. The postponement to November had already forced calendar adjustments: Lusail was placed after Malaysia, while Portimao and Valencia were pushed back a week.
Cutting the calendar is not just about the number of races. It has direct implications for team strategies and rider championships. Those leaving Sepang (1 November) as championship leaders would have a significant advantage, with one fewer round for rivals to close the gap.
The issue also raises long-term concerns. No draft calendars for 2027 have been released yet, neither for MotoGP nor F1. Everyone is waiting for the situation to evolve, but time is running out. If the crisis persists, next season's schedule could be affected as well.
For fans, this is disappointing news. Lusail's spectacular night race holds a special place in the calendar. However, safety and regional stability remain the top priority. We can only hope for a swift resolution that allows racing to continue—or at least prevents the calendar from shrinking further.
