Porsche is reportedly developing a dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT) equipped with a clutch pedal and manual gear lever, mirroring the approach Ferrari introduced with its 12Cilindri Manuale. That model initially thrilled enthusiasts who thought it marked a genuine return to manual driving, but it turned out to be a simulated manual setup layered onto an existing DCT.
According to FormulaPassion, Ferrari chose a hybrid solution: keeping the DCT architecture and adding a clutch pedal and lever connected to sensors and the ECU rather than physical mechanisms. The clutch pedal doesn't actually engage gears; it sends signals to the transmission computer to execute gear changes. The goal was to cut development costs while offering a more analog feel without designing a new gearbox from scratch.
Now, Porsche appears to be taking a similar path. A patent filed with the European Patent Office describes a dual-clutch automatic transmission that also includes a clutch pedal and a gear lever. In normal operation, the system works as a full automatic, but the driver can activate a special mode where the clutch pedal commands the control unit and the lever follows an H-pattern. More notably, the patent mentions potential compatibility with hybrid configurations, where the electric motor is integrated into the DCT—a technical challenge Porsche currently faces.
Porsche's move is not just imitation. The brand is renowned for its PDK transmission, praised for its speed and precision, yet there is a market segment longing for direct driver involvement. By adopting Ferrari's approach, Porsche could offer a 'manual' option without sacrificing DCT efficiency and performance. It also answers criticism that modern sports cars are losing their soul due to automation.
For enthusiasts, this news is exciting. Although not a true manual, the presence of a clutch pedal and H-pattern lever can evoke nostalgia and provide a unique level of satisfaction.
