A heart-stopping moment unfolded in the pit lane when Brodie Kostecki narrowly missed hitting the Team 18 crew while exiting his pit stop. The incident has raised serious concerns about pit crew safety, a job that carries immense pressure and risk.
In the incident, Kostecki, who had just completed his pit stop, sped through the Team 18 area as they were preparing to service Anton De Pasquale. Team 18's car controller, Croke, narrowly avoided being hit and had to jump out of the way with quick reflexes.
“I've been a car controller for many years, and this is the closest I've come to getting hit,” Croke told Speedcafe. “Luckily I've got pretty good reflexes and got out of the way. I hate to think what would have happened if I ended up on the bonnet.”

The incident has been referred to the stewards, and a penalty for an unsafe release is expected. Croke affirmed there was no agreement between teams allowing Kostecki to drive through their area.
“Normally, we have a pretty good understanding with DJR, especially on entry. But on exit, we never really discussed anything,” he explained. “We had a last-minute call to set up, so we couldn't wait for them to complete their stop. Tom, their car controller, may have given a signal, but I didn't see it because I was busy helping the crew.”
This incident highlights a often-overlooked issue of pit crew safety. Croke emphasized the need for more attention to the high risks faced by pit crews, especially in double-stack situations. “We take it seriously, and it's a very high-risk job that probably doesn't get enough credit,” he concluded.
