Oscar Piastri described his Spanish Grand Prix as a painful experience after finishing eighth, his lowest race finish since the British Grand Prix in July. The McLaren driver had to race with front wing damage from a first-lap collision with George Russell, which cost him valuable positions and left him with an unbalanced car for all 57 laps.
The incident occurred at the start when Russell and Piastri made contact twice approaching Turn 1. The damage forced Piastri to carry a compromised car throughout the race. "It was pretty painful from Lap 1. Not much I really could have done from there," Piastri told F1.com. "The timing of the VSC was certainly not ideal for us. Staying on the hard. It was just a difficult afternoon."
McLaren opted to keep Piastri out when a Virtual Safety Car was triggered on Lap 15 by Lance Stroll stopping with brake problems. The strategy committed him to a longer opening stint on the hard compound, but he eventually pitted on Lap 43 to attempt an undercut on Liam Lawson. However, he rejoined in traffic and was unable to clear Franco Colapinto in the closing stages. Pierre Gasly's penultimate-lap stop ultimately promoted Piastri to eighth, though no further progress was possible before the chequered flag.
The result compounded a difficult weekend for Piastri, who had already been on the back foot after qualifying. "I think it was mostly down to qualifying. I think also Lap 1 obviously was far from ideal, having damage for the whole race. So yeah, it was tough like that," he said. Nevertheless, Piastri chose to view the remainder of the race as a learning opportunity. "I think today we just tried to learn as much as I could to get more out of the car and the way I drive it. So yeah. Hopefully we've learnt a few things for the rest of the year."
Up ahead, Andrea Kimi Antonelli took advantage of Lando Norris's misfortune to win the Spanish GP. Norris, who was also affected by the VSC, had to settle for a position off the podium. Meanwhile, George Russell finished ahead of Piastri after their early contact. The race in Madrid delivered drama from the start, with an incident at the chicane involving several drivers.
With this result, Piastri must bounce back quickly as the Azerbaijan Grand Prix takes place on September 24. He still has time to analyse data and improve performance with the team. The championship battle is intensifying, and every point matters. The setback in Spain was a heavy blow, but Piastri is known for learning quickly from adversity.
