A heartbreaking climax struck Oliver Solberg's world championship campaign as a late mistake just two corners from the finish of the season's final special stage shattered his title dreams. Piloting the Toyota GR Yaris Rally1, a wide moment at a tight left-hand corner sent the car tumbling into the bushes, instantly slipping the world crown from his grasp in his debut full WRC season.

Tension had reached a fever pitch at the stage finish prior to the incident, with television crews already swarming around Petter Solberg to capture history in the making. Holding a 1.9-second advantage and mere hundred metres from the finish line, the young charger seemingly had the ultimate prize locked down before a fateful pre-stage adjustment altered the car's dynamic behavior dramatically.

Petter Solberg later disclosed that a technical modification made right before the start fundamentally changed how the rally machine handled on the loose surface. "When Oliver came out and turned left by the beach, the road characteristics were a little bit different. Before the start of the stage, they raised the car by 25 millimetres and the car was not behaving the same," Petter explained regarding the crucial setup shift that caught the driver off guard.

The veteran world champion recalled the sinking feeling when disaster struck within sight of the chequered flag. "I was running towards the finish line when I saw a big plume of dust rising on the left. I just thought, 'Fuck!' I was jumping around, not in celebration but in disappointment," he detailed. Reaching the end of the stage, the young driver immediately expressed deep remorse to his father for missing out on a unique family milestone.

"He told me, 'I’m sorry, Dad. I wanted us to be the first father and son to both become world champions, but I failed.' I said to him, 'You didn’t fail! What you have done is absolutely incredible,'" Petter recounted. Despite the bitter end to the campaign, the family has already put the heartbreak behind them, fully convinced that the grueling experience will forge an even fiercer competitor for next year.
