Pedro Acosta's maiden MotoGP victory at the Austrian Grand Prix was more than just a trophy. Behind the emotional celebration at Spielberg lies a story of potential that makes KTM crew chief Paul Trevathan shudder. "It's a scary question," he said when asked how much more Acosta can improve.
Acosta has finally broken through. After a long wait, the Spanish rider secured his first premier class win. Trevathan, who has been with him since he stepped up to the factory KTM team in 2025, witnessed firsthand how the young rider navigated tough times: a major slump early in the European season last year, rumors of a move, and KTM's financial turmoil. All of that made the moment in Austria feel so emotional.
Trevathan describes Acosta as a rider who keeps evolving. "The way he learns, the way he adapts... He had a month off in the summer and came back at a different level. He can put something in his subconscious and bring something new to the game," he said. He admits he can't predict the limit of Acosta's potential. "I can't answer your question, but he's still going this way," he added.
What made this win even more special was how Acosta bounced back from two incidents: a crash in Saturday's sprint and Sunday morning warm-up. Extra pressure came because this is KTM's home race, and chances to beat Ducati and Aprilia are rare. "We were fast all weekend. But after yesterday, questions arise: too confident? Nerves? Because it's our home?" Trevathan explained.
According to him, Acosta reacted with maturity. "He was really angry at himself. But he said, 'This is on me.' That's what great champions do," Trevathan said. He added that his rider needed only about an hour to turn disappointment into motivation. "He hasn't been hard to work with this week."
This victory also proves the resilience of the KTM team amid various obstacles. Trevathan, who has worked with Miguel Oliveira, Mika Kallio, and Pol Espargaro, sees something different in Acosta. "I've seen great riders do this, but they normally take a winter to reset. Acosta did it in just the summer break," he praised.
With this result, Acosta reaffirms his position as one of the brightest talents on the grid. If his potential is called 'scary' by the person closest to him, rivals in MotoGP have reason to be wary. The question now is not whether Acosta can win, but how often he will do it.
