Pedro Acosta was on the verge of a heroic home victory for KTM. With three laps to go in the Austrian Sprint, the Spanish sensation led comfortably. But a critical error at the 2A-B chicane saw him lose control and crash out, handing the win to his rivals. It was a bitter pill to swallow for the Murcian.
The mistake occurred when Acosta glanced at his dashboard warnings. “I was looking for warnings and lost concentration, braking point, and went wide,” he admitted to Sky Sport MotoGP. “It was totally my fault.” Despite the heartbreak, Acosta remained honest and took full responsibility for the incident.
Throughout the race, Acosta had been dominant. He led from the start and managed a comfortable gap. But the final three laps turned into a nightmare. A small error at the same corner that often catches out riders cost him dearly. He had to settle for nothing.
“This was my strongest race,” Acosta added. “We try not to think about it, focus on tomorrow, and be fast again. The team? There was nothing to say. It's all my fault. We'll try to make amends tomorrow.” His words reflected a maturity beyond his years, but the disappointment was evident.
For KTM, this was a tough blow. They had hoped to celebrate a home win, and Acosta was their best shot. The Sprint format leaves little room for error, and Acosta learned that the hard way. Now, all eyes turn to Sunday's main race.
In the championship standings, Acosta still trails the leaders. A win in Austria would have been a massive boost. With his raw speed, he remains a threat. But he must eliminate these mistakes to challenge for the title.
