Pedro Acosta etched his name into the history books by securing his first-ever MotoGP victory at the Qatar Airways Grand Prix of Austria at the Red Bull Ring on Sunday (30/8/2026). The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider delivered a stunning performance to make amends for his Sprint race blunder the day before.
The race was fiercely contested from the start. Jorge Martin (Aprilia Racing) made a perfect launch to grab the holeshot out of Turn 1. Marco Bezzecchi, Martin's teammate, slotted into second, with Ai Ogura (SuperFile Trackhouse MotoGP Team) in third. Meanwhile, Acosta, starting from the second row, quickly dispatched Marc Marquez (Ducati Lenovo Team) and began hunting down the leading trio.
On lap 2, Bezzecchi dived past Martin at Turn 1 to take the lead. But Martin responded immediately, retaking the position. Behind them, Marc Marquez struggled to match the pace, especially after being passed by Ogura. The world champion had to fight hard to hold off Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) and Fermin Aldeguer (BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP).
A mistake from Bezzecchi at Turn 10 on lap 4 saw him run wide, and Acosta pounced to snatch second place. The hunt was on. Despite Martin's solid defense, Acosta's relentless pressure paid off on lap 9 when he executed a decisive overtake to take the lead. From there, the KTM rider pulled away, extending his advantage lap by lap.
Martin, managing his fuel and tires, soon realized he had no answer to Acosta's pace and settled for second. Acosta crossed the line to claim a memorable maiden MotoGP win, also marking KTM's first dry-weather victory since Miguel Oliveira at the 2022 Thai Grand Prix.
Martin finished second ahead of teammate Bezzecchi, while Ogura produced a heroic ride to finish fourth. Marc Marquez had to settle for fifth after a race-long battle with Aldeguer, who finished eighth. Binder came home sixth, followed by Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) in seventh. Fabio Di Giannantonio (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team) and Johann Zarco (Castrol Honda LCR) completed the top ten.
In the championship standings, Jorge Martin extends his lead to 12 points over Marc Marquez, with Bezzecchi now 42 points adrift. Acosta's 25-point haul elevates him to fourth overall, four points ahead of Di Giannantonio in fifth.
Round 16 of the 2026 MotoGP World Championship will take place at the Japanese Grand Prix on 2-4 October. Can Acosta continue his momentum? Only time will tell.
