Pedro Acosta Explains Tire Struggles in Lusail That Force Him into Q1

The opening day at the Lusail International Circuit brought unexpected frustration for Pedro Acosta. The young Spanish sensation found himself outside the direct Q2 cutoff during Friday afternoon practice, forcing him to fight through the demanding Q1 session this weekend. Earlier in the day, things looked much brighter when the factory rider secured a strong fourth place in the opening practice session with consistent pace.

However, the afternoon session completely flipped the script as grip levels dropped and tire behavior baffled the garage. While the used medium rear tire felt predictable and fast, bolting on a brand-new soft compound for the crucial time-attack runs destroyed his rear traction and ruined his flying laps. The sudden shift left both the rider and his engineering crew searching for answers under the lights of the desert circuit.

Reflecting on the perplexing issues during practice, the talented Spaniard admitted that the day unfolded even tougher than anticipated. "Yes, I expected before coming here that this was going to be the hardest race of the year," Acosta explained when discussing the paddock atmosphere and track challenges.

He further detailed the strange contrast in tire performance that caught the team off guard during the afternoon session. "But anyway, it is true that something weird happened, because I was showing good pace and a good fast lap with the used medium, and then with the new soft, the time attack was a complete disaster. I think we need to review it because, as I say, I was fast with the medium and very slow with the soft. Something had to happen. Bastianini and Bradl did a good lap, so we will see if we can recover ground," he added.

Describing the physical sensation aboard his RC16 machine, the reigning rookie standout emphasized the severe lack of rear contact patch stability during heavy braking zones. "Well, I was lacking a lot of grip, and the braking capacity with the rear tire was also very, very low. Even comparing the rear medium with ten, eleven, or twelve laps to a new soft, it has been quite strange. Let's see what it is," he concluded.

Track conditions also played a role as a fine layer of desert dust coated the asphalt, complicating the tire evaluation process even further. Despite the hurdles, the focus now shifts entirely toward solving the telemetric puzzle and securing a strong recovery during Saturday's action.
