Jorge Martin clinched a dramatic victory in the MotoGP Austrian Grand Prix sprint race after long-time leader Pedro Acosta crashed out at Turn 2. The Aprilia rider capitalised on Acosta's misfortune to take the win and now leads the championship by three points over Marc Marquez.
Starting from pole, Martin initially led into Turn 1 but ran wide, allowing Marquez to launch an aggressive move at the Turn 2 chicane. The manoeuvre forced Martin off track and dropped him to eighth. However, Marquez's lead was short-lived as Acosta seized the advantage at Turn 3 when the Ducati rider made a braking error.
Acosta then pulled away, while Martin began his charge back through the field. Despite a track limits warning, the Spaniard was up to third by lap seven after passing Marco Bezzecchi. A lap later, he executed a hard move on Marquez at Turn 1 to take second and immediately opened a gap.
Victory seemed unlikely for Martin until three laps from the end, when Acosta, who had been dominant on the KTM, suffered an unforced crash at Turn 2. That handed Martin the lead, and he cruised to the finish. Marquez finished second, with Bezzecchi completing the podium.
Ai Ogura impressed with fourth for Trackhouse Aprilia, ahead of Alex Marquez (Gresini Ducati) and Pecco Bagnaia (Ducati). Johann Zarco was seventh for LCR Honda, while the final points went to Fermin Aldeguer (Gresini) and Brad Binder (KTM).
Acosta remounted after his crash but retired in the pits on the final lap. Franco Morbidelli (VR46) was the only other crasher. The result tightens the title fight, with Martin now leading Marquez by three points ahead of Sunday's main race.
