Chip Ganassi Racing has prepared a special surprise for Alex Palou at the 2026 IndyCar season finale. For the race at Laguna Seca, the Spanish driver's car will feature a striking livery inspired by team legend Alex Zanardi.
Zanardi secured back-to-back championships in 1997 and 1998 with the team, and his iconic lightning bolt livery remains one of the most memorable in IndyCar history. Now, Palou will revive that design for the season-deciding race at a track deeply associated with Zanardi.
This is more than just a visual tribute. Palou is set to be officially crowned as a five-time series champion at Laguna Seca. Additionally, the weekend marks the 30th anniversary of CGR and Honda's first IndyCar title, highlighted by Zanardi's famous pass at the Corkscrew corner.
Zanardi passed away in May 2026, years after a horrific accident in 2001 that led to the amputation of both legs. Despite his injuries, he remained a fierce competitor and an inspiration to many.
“I'm so excited to get the lightning bolt back on our car,” said Palou. “We're racing in memory of Alex Zanardi. We're racing at Laguna, his place, his corner. And on top of that, it's the 30th anniversary of CGR's and Honda's first IndyCar championship. So, we're putting everything together for the fans, for ourselves as well. And hopefully it's a great race for the No. 10 DHL car.”
As a nice touch, the #10 entry will officially be named 'DHL Lightning Bolt Honda' on the entry list. The livery will debut during Friday practice on September 3, ahead of the season finale on Sunday, September 5, 2026.
Fans have long held Zanardi's classic livery in high regard, and seeing it return to the track will surely be an emotional moment. It's a fitting way to honor a beloved figure while celebrating Palou's impending championship success.
