Oscar Piastri believes his results during the first half of the 2026 Formula 1 season have not fully reflected the progress he has made as a driver amid a difficult campaign for McLaren.
Piastri sits seventh in the drivers' championship with 92 points after 11 rounds and remains without a victory this season. The Australian has claimed two podiums, while two DNS results and several reliability problems, including in Hungary, have restricted his points haul.
“I think the good results have been one thing, but I feel like I've also learned a lot about how I can improve myself as a driver, even if the results don't always show it,” Piastri said.

Piastri described the first half of the season as up and down, with McLaren's overall performance not consistently reaching the level expected following its major success in 2025. McLaren sits third in the constructors' championship on 220 points, 159 behind Mercedes and 87 adrift of Ferrari.
Piastri identified Japan and Miami as his strongest weekends in terms of results. However, he also highlighted the Austrian Grand Prix as an important moment in his development despite finishing fourth after starting seventh.
Austria represented an immediate response to a difficult Barcelona-Catalunya weekend, where Piastri finished 58 seconds behind race winner Lewis Hamilton and 35 seconds behind team-mate Lando Norris. Piastri said that event forced him to learn and make significant improvements.
“Barcelona was definitely one of the more difficult weekends of the year, and I had to learn a lot from that one and improve quite a lot,” he said. “I feel like Austria was really good to bounce back and put some of that learning into place.”
For Piastri, that development has been one of the key positives from the opening half of the campaign even when it has not always been visible in the final results. His next challenge will be converting those lessons into greater consistency when the 2026 Formula 1 season resumes.
