Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Oscar Piastri has admitted he learned several “tough lessons” following the collapse of his Formula 1 title challenge during the 2025 season.
The McLaren F1 Team driver appeared to be in a commanding position in the championship after securing a grand chelem at the Dutch Grand Prix. That result gave Piastri a 34-point lead over team-mate Lando Norris and a 104-point advantage over Red Bull Racing driver Max Verstappen.
However, the momentum shifted dramatically in the following races. A series of costly setbacks began with a qualifying crash, followed by a false start and a first-lap collision at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

His struggles continued when he crashed out of the Sprint race at the United States Grand Prix after a first-corner incident with Norris. Piastri also retired from the Sprint at the São Paulo Grand Prix during a turbulent sequence of races.
Across the period between Azerbaijan and the Las Vegas Grand Prix, Piastri recorded inconsistent results of DNF-4-5-5-5-DSQ in the main races. Although he recovered strongly at the Qatar Grand Prix, a strategic error from McLaren ultimately cost him a potential victory.
Piastri eventually finished third in the drivers’ championship, ending the season 13 points behind Norris and 11 behind Verstappen, despite claiming seven race wins during only his third season in Formula 1.
Reflecting on the campaign, Piastri said the latter stages of the season presented new challenges that helped him grow as a driver.
“I think a lot of the lessons were both positive and some of them were tougher lessons to learn,” Piastri told media.
“With the peaks I had last year, it was a nice confidence boost and a statement to myself that when I get things right and maximise my potential, I can be a very strong competitor.”
He explained that several of the challenges late in the season came from areas that had not tested him earlier in the year.
“In Austin and Mexico it was more from a technical and driving point of view that I hadn’t been challenged on earlier in the season.”
Piastri also highlighted the importance of learning how to handle unpredictable race situations.
“There was a long string of races where things were very eventful for lots of different reasons.”
“Taking the lessons from that and understanding how I can manage those situations better — and how we as a team can manage them better — was probably one of the most important lessons from last year.”
The Australian added that he has spent considerable time analysing the events of the 2025 season as he prepares for the upcoming Formula 1 campaign, aiming to apply those lessons in another bid for the world championship.
