Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Oscar Piastri of McLaren has earned strong praise after responding to a difficult start to the 2026 Formula 1 season with a performance that underlined his development.
The opening two rounds proved highly challenging for Piastri. He failed to start in Australia after an incident on his way to the grid, before being sidelined again in China due to a pre-race mechanical issue. The setbacks marked a difficult continuation following his title loss to team-mate Lando Norris in the previous season.
Under the new 2026 regulations introduced by the FIA, adapting to the revised car characteristics has added further complexity. Increased reliance on energy systems and aerodynamic changes have made consistency harder to achieve, particularly for drivers who lost early-season momentum.

McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella stated that the difficult start ultimately provided Piastri with an opportunity to demonstrate resilience and personal growth.
“The start of the season has given Oscar the opportunity to test his maturity, his strength, and his ability to absorb adversity.”
“I have to say that the team is very impressed by the strength that this driver is showing.”
Stella emphasised that Piastri’s response had a broader impact beyond individual performance, acting as a source of motivation within the team during a demanding phase of the season.
“When you see a driver responding like that after two races in which he could not even take part, it becomes extremely motivating for the whole team.”
“This is not only about a driver becoming faster, but also about a person becoming more mature and mentally stronger.”
Piastri’s turnaround became evident at the Japanese Grand Prix, where he secured McLaren’s first podium of the season with a second-place finish. The result demonstrated his ability to maximise the team’s package under competitive conditions while restoring lost momentum.
From a performance standpoint, the result also reflects McLaren’s improving understanding of the 2026 car. Compared to rivals such as Ferrari and Mercedes, McLaren has begun to show gains in race execution, particularly in energy management and strategic consistency.
As the 2026 season progresses, maintaining this trajectory will be critical for both Piastri and McLaren. With a strengthened mental foundation and continued technical adaptation, the momentum gained in Japan could represent a pivotal turning point in Piastri’s campaign.
