Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Oscar Piastri of McLaren encountered a technical setback during Pirelli tyre testing at the Nürburgring, limiting his running in a key development session for the 2027 Formula 1 regulations.

The opening day of the test began under damp conditions following overnight rain, with drivers initially completing installation laps on intermediate tyres. Although track conditions improved later in the morning, the programme was delayed before switching to the planned slick tyre runs.

Piastri was joined on track by George Russell of Mercedes, as both teams conducted dry-weather tyre development work under Pirelli’s supervision. Under the regulations governing these tests, teams are not permitted to evaluate performance upgrades, with all run plans dictated by Pirelli, including “blind” compound testing where drivers are unaware of the tyre specifications.

Both drivers began their sessions with eight-lap runs, evaluating different construction variants of the C3 compound. Pirelli described the initial data as promising, before the programme shifted towards longer stints, particularly for Russell.

However, Piastri’s running was significantly disrupted when his MCL40 developed a technical issue. The Australian was confined to the garage from the lunch break until near the end of the session, limiting his overall contribution to the test programme.

Piastri completed a total of 65 laps, recording a best time of 1:35.096, while Russell accumulated 127 laps with a fastest lap of 1:33.899, highlighting a substantial difference in data collection between the two drivers.

The test will continue into a second day, with Lando Norris set to take over from Piastri at McLaren, while Kimi Antonelli will replace Russell for Mercedes.

This Nürburgring test forms a critical part of preparations for the 2027 regulatory cycle, particularly in the development of new tyre specifications. Despite the setback, McLaren will look to recover lost track time and maximise data acquisition during the remaining running.
