Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Oscar Piastri was forced out of the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix 2026 after crashing before the race had even started at Albert Park, Melbourne.
The McLaren driver had been set to begin his home race from fifth on the grid, ahead of team-mate Lando Norris. However, the incident occurred shortly after the pit lane opened as drivers began their laps to the grid in preparation for the race start.
While navigating Turn 4, Piastri lost control of his car while riding the kerb and spun across the track before hitting the barrier on the opposite side. The impact caused damage that prevented the Australian driver from continuing to the starting grid.
During team radio communication, McLaren informed Norris that Piastri had lost control of the car while shifting gears as he ran over the kerb.
As a result of the crash, Piastri was immediately eliminated from the season-opening race. With the local favourite out, only 21 cars were able to line up on the grid for the 2026 Australian Grand Prix.
The incident marks another disappointment for Piastri at his home race. In the previous season, the Australian also endured a difficult result after spinning in wet conditions while battling near the front, eventually finishing ninth.
