British driver Ollie Millroy has been discharged from hospital and returned home following a horrific fireball crash in a China GT race at the Shanghai International Circuit earlier this month. The incident, which saw his Ferrari burst into flames, has left him with multiple injuries and a changed perspective on life.
The crash occurred at the end of the back straight when several cars made contact, triggering a massive fire. Millroy was rescued from his burning car by Porsche driver Loek Hartog. He underwent several operations, and the marshals' response has been widely condemned for its slowness.
After two weeks in hospital, Millroy was discharged over the weekend. In a heartfelt statement, he expressed gratitude and reflection. "Exactly two weeks after my crash in Shanghai, I've been discharged from hospital," he said. "Body strapped up with a bagful of medication, it's time to continue healing at home."
He emphasized that while he will eventually make a full recovery, the experience has changed his life forever. "It has given me a completely different outlook, and I will never take for granted what we have and the beautiful world around us," he added.
Millroy also shared a poignant message about cherishing life and loved ones. "Treat every day as if it's your last, hold your loved ones close to you, don't waste your time and energy on things that are irrelevant or make you unhappy. And, as Loek Hartog taught us all, look out for each other, as one team. Life can be short, so let's make the most of it!"
The aftermath of the crash has also impacted the China GT series. Several teams, including Millroy's AAI Motorsports squad, have announced they will not return to the championship. The series has launched an investigation into the incident and the response processes.
CCTV footage revealed that it took over four minutes for the chief medical officer to arrive and almost seven minutes for the ambulance. Reports have emerged claiming the ambulance driver was asleep at the time. This incident underscores the critical need for stringent safety protocols in international motorsport.
Millroy's story serves as a stark reminder of the risks drivers face and a call for improved safety measures. His return home marks the beginning of a new chapter, one he will undoubtedly embrace with renewed vigor and awareness.
