Bearman Tears Up After Driving Senna's Lotus 97T: 'A Very Powerful Moment'

Haas F1 driver Oliver Bearman has revealed he was moved to tears after driving Ayrton Senna's 1985 race-winning Lotus 97T at Silverstone, calling it one of the best days of his life.

In a recent appearance on the F1 Beyond The Grid podcast, Bearman detailed his emotional run in the exact chassis Senna used to claim his maiden grand prix victory. The 21-year-old Briton was born a decade after Senna's tragic death, yet the experience left a profound impact.

“I think it was a mixture of things. The most important was that it was the exact chassis that Ayrton won his first ever race in,” Bearman explained. “For me, Ayrton Senna is someone everybody regarded as the absolute best. It was such an emotional moment, sharing it with my father and girlfriend, and having his original mechanic there.”

Bearman admitted he knew he would get emotional. “As soon as my manager told me what I was going to be doing, a month before, I knew it was going to be a really powerful day. Driving the car was one of the best days of my life, and those emotions hit me really hard after,” he said.

There was a fun twist to the session. Bearman was instructed to complete just three laps to preserve the engine, but he couldn't resist one more. “They said, 'When you see the camera car, pull in behind and follow it back to the pits.' But I thought, 'Oh, I can't stop yet.' So I went straight past the camera car flat out. All of the pitwall were not watching anymore, and I flew past for one more glory lap. It was super fun,” he recounted.

This experience serves as a powerful reminder of Senna's enduring legacy. For Bearman, it was more than a test—it was a personal tribute to a legend, and it highlights the young driver's growing stature in F1.
