Norris Stunned by Maiden Madring Pole: One of My Best Laps

Lando Norris made history at the brand-new Madring circuit in Madrid, securing the first-ever Formula 1 pole position at the track. The British driver delivered a stunning performance in Q3, edging out Kimi Antonelli by a mere 11 milliseconds and claiming his third pole in the last four races. This feat is even more remarkable given that Norris missed FP2 entirely on Friday due to a gearbox issue.

“I'm shocked, I'm a bit surprised to be here right now,” Norris said in the post-qualifying interview. “My God, that was one of the best laps I've ever done in my career. I'm over the moon. I knew what I wanted to do, the only question was whether my mind would allow it. It's one of those laps where you look at the time and say, ‘Oh, that was fantastic’.”

Data analysis revealed that Norris could have gone even faster, having lost a couple of tenths in the final corner. “The adrenaline was sky-high on that last lap,” he added. “You have to relax and let it flow. The car felt good, so I was comfortable on track. It was almost perfect, except for the last corner: I thought I was going to hit the wall and the guys would have to repair the car tonight. It was one of those moments where you're in a total flow state.”

This pole is a testament to McLaren's strength at the challenging new circuit. Despite limited running, Norris adapted quickly and maximized the car's potential. Meanwhile, Mercedes and Ferrari had to watch Norris dominate. Kimi Antonelli, who came close, showed Mercedes has pace but not enough to beat Norris.

The qualifying result also strengthens Norris's position in the drivers' championship. With three poles in four races, he is sending a clear message that his world title was no fluke. He is consistently at the front, ready to fight hard in the race.

The race at Madring will be the real test. Starting from pole is an advantage, but with a new track, tire management and strategy will be crucial. Norris, who says he is in the best mental state, is ready to seize the opportunity for victory.
