Lando Norris was left shocked after securing pole position for the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix at the new Madring circuit, edging out championship leader Kimi Antonelli by a mere 0.011 seconds. The McLaren driver set a time of 1m31.824s, which he described as one of the best laps of his career.
“I'm shocked. I'm a little bit surprised to be here now,” an elated Norris said. “My god, it was probably one of the best laps I've done ever in my career. I'm very, very happy, very proud, very happy for the team. It was just one of those laps where everything came together.”
The pole is Norris's third of the season and his third in the last four grands prix. The 5.4km Madring circuit challenged drivers with its Jeddah-like combination of high-speed corners and close walls, leaving zero room for error, which made the qualifying session even more thrilling and rewarding.
“The adrenaline was high on the last lap,” Norris reported. “It's just one where you've just got to relax, just let it all flow. It's easy to get tense around here, and there's a lot of walls that come at you pretty quickly. I just took a good breath, and everything kind of came together, so it was pretty much perfect.”
Antonelli, who had been impressive throughout the session, had to settle for second place. He looked set to claim his seventh pole of the season, but Norris pipped him with a stunning lap. This result tightens the battle at the top of the standings, with Norris closing in on Antonelli.
For McLaren, this pole is a testament to their improved performance at a circuit that demands bravery and precision. Norris hopes to convert the pole into a win in the race. “I'm just very happy. One of those laps where you look at the lap time at the end, and you're like, ‘Oh, shit, that was pretty good’,” he concluded.
