Lando Norris made an immediate statement at the new Madring circuit. The McLaren driver stormed to pole position for the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix, edging out Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli by a mere 0.011 seconds in the dying moments of qualifying.
Antonelli, impressive throughout the session, had to settle for second, with Red Bull's Max Verstappen lining up third alongside Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton in fourth. The stage is set for a thrilling battle among the top teams.
Q2 delivered high drama. Nico Hulkenberg and Arvid Lindblad briefly held provisional Q3 spots, pushing their respective teammates Gabriel Bortoleto and Yuki Tsunoda to the bubble. Both Alpines of Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto were under pressure after failing to complete their first flyers, with Colapinto surviving a massive scare as his car snapped sideways through the ultra-fast Monumental banking. He composed himself to deliver a solid final lap, securing eighth and a Q3 berth ahead of McLaren's Oscar Piastri. Verstappen topped the session from Antonelli, while Lindblad was the sole midfield car to advance at the expense of the two Audis.
Esteban Ocon qualified 13th for Haas, while a frustrated Gasly could only manage 14th after lamenting a radically different car balance compared to FP3. Tsunoda and Albon followed in 15th and 16th.
Earlier, George Russell led Q1, pipping teammate Antonelli by 0.056s despite a harmless tap with the wall. Red Bull looked competitive with Lawson third on softs and Verstappen fourth on mediums, saving a set of softs for later. Ferrari's Hamilton and Leclerc followed the same strategy, each claiming a top-seven spot.
At the bottom, Williams was once again on the cusp of Q2. Albon beat teammate and crowd favourite Carlos Sainz by just 0.005s to grab the final Q2 ticket in 16th, bouncing back from a wall tap in FP3 that forced him to sit out most of the session. Sainz was still the highest-placed Spaniard, while Fernando Alonso could only manage 18th. Cadillac's Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas propped up the timesheets, with Bottas unable to complete a clean lap after being impeded by Sainz.
Qualifying began without Haas driver Oliver Bearman. A "gutted" Bearman suffered a heavy crash at the end of a delayed FP3, leaving Haas facing an impossible task to repair his car in time. Lance Stroll also failed to set a time due to a suspected water leak, as reported by Aston Martin.
