McLaren's Lando Norris won the 2026 Dutch Grand Prix after overhauling Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli, who finished second ahead of team-mate George Russell. The victory was a crucial step for Norris in his title fight.
The race at Zandvoort started dramatically when Max Verstappen crashed on the opening lap. The Dutchman spun and hit the barriers at the final corner on a damp track, ending his home race prematurely. Red flags were immediately waved, and the repair process took a while.
At the restart, Antonelli passed Norris off the line, but Norris, the championship leader, stayed close. Both made their second pitstop on lap 40. On lap 54, Norris finally overtook Antonelli around the outside of Turn 1, a move that proved decisive.
However, the race was not over. On lap 56, Haas' Esteban Ocon stopped at Turn 3, triggering a Virtual Safety Car (VSC). Antonelli pitted for fresh softs, as did the Ferraris. Norris, who stayed out, led, with Russell moving up to second.
After the VSC, Mercedes decided to swap Russell and Antonelli on lap 65, prompting protests from Russell, who felt the team had lost a double podium. Norris won comfortably, by more than 11 seconds, while Russell held off Lewis Hamilton to finish third.
Hamilton, meanwhile, showed frustration with Ferrari's strategy. He extended his stints longer than team-mate Charles Leclerc, and when Leclerc pitted on lap 44, Hamilton complained over the radio: "Great way of wasting time guys, good job."
Oscar Piastri had to settle for sixth after a less favorable tire strategy, and Liam Lawson finished seventh despite a 10-second penalty. The race also featured a brilliant reflex action from Nico Hulkenberg, who avoided a collision with his Audi team-mate Gabriel Bortoleto at the end of the opening lap.
