Lando Norris has set aside his on-track Formula 1 rivalry to publicly support Max Verstappen ahead of the Dutch driver’s participation in the Nurburgring 24 Hours. The gesture highlights mutual respect between competitors despite their ongoing battles in the 2026 F1 season.
Verstappen is preparing to compete at the legendary Nordschleife layout of the Nürburgring, widely regarded as one of the most demanding circuits in global motorsport. He has already taken part in multiple GT events this year as part of his preparation for the endurance classic scheduled for mid-May.
Norris confirmed he intends to follow Verstappen’s progress as closely as possible during the 24-hour race, underlining his appreciation for the challenge presented by the circuit. The Nordschleife’s combination of high-speed sections, elevation changes, and limited runoff areas requires exceptional precision and adaptability, particularly over extended race durations.
The McLaren driver recently gained firsthand experience of the circuit during a tyre test conducted with Pirelli. On that occasion, Norris drove a McLaren road-based performance car, allowing him to evaluate the circuit’s technical demands beyond simulator environments.
From a technical standpoint, the Nordschleife places unique emphasis on mechanical grip, suspension compliance, and durability, rather than the high-downforce setups typical of Formula 1 circuits. These characteristics make endurance racing at the venue a distinct challenge, requiring a different engineering approach and race management strategy.
Norris described his Nordschleife outing as one of the most enjoyable driving experiences of his season so far, noting that familiarity gained through simulators such as iRacing and Gran Turismo contributed to his confidence on track. However, he also acknowledged the inherent risks associated with the circuit, which has historically been linked to serious incidents.
Despite the competitive tension in Formula 1, Norris’ support for Verstappen reflects the broader culture within motorsport, where drivers often recognise and respect achievements across different disciplines. The Nurburgring 24 Hours remains a prestigious event that continues to attract top-level talent from various categories.
