The Formula 1 practice debut for Nikola Tsolov at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez was overshadowed by a bizarre physical issue that tested the rookie's composure. The young Bulgarian driver was forced to stand up inside the Racing Bulls cockpit upon returning to the garage after reporting severe circulation problems in his right leg during the opening session of the Mexico City Grand Prix.

This golden opportunity was handed to Tsolov to step in for Liam Lawson, amid an intense battle to secure a full-time seat for the upcoming season. While attempting to impress the team management, Tsolov had to overcome an unexpected physical hurdle that he admitted to experiencing previously during his career in Formula 2.

"I had that a few times before, driving in F2," Tsolov explained regarding the situation inside the garage. "It's just the seat being a bit tighter than what we would like on my right leg. My blood flow stopped completely when pressing down fully on the throttle."

The 19-year-old further detailed how the numbness rapidly took over his lower limbs, making it nearly impossible to comfortably operate the car on track. "When you press in full throttle, you move up into the seat. That kind of compresses your legs. That was the thing; I couldn't feel them. It was a dead leg, pretty much."

"You know when you get the tingly feeling, with pins and needles. That was it in the beginning, and I thought, 'I will do that; it's fine'. But at some point I stopped feeling my legs, so I had to jump out. I had to shake it out, and after two or three minutes, it came back," he added.

Despite the physical drama that interrupted his running, Tsolov managed to complete a solid total of 28 laps, finishing his best effort just a tenth of a second shy of temporary teammate Arvid Lindblad. This encouraging performance proved that his limited preparation—consisting of a previous car test day in Imola and simulator sessions in Faenza—was enough to keep him on the pace.

Tsolov is currently embroiled in a fierce battle for the F2 crown, sitting just seven points behind championship leader Rafael Camara with two rounds remaining. His impressive F1 debut appearance firmly cements his status as a serious contender for future premier class seats.
