Nicolo Bulega has opened up on his decision to join the Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team for the 2027 MotoGP season. The Italian rider insists that his past with Valentino Rossi's squad was a major factor, not just the opportunity that lay ahead.
Bulega is no stranger to VR46. He made his grand prix debut in Moto3 back in 2016 with that very team, spending four seasons there, including a step up to Moto2 in 2019, before moving to Gresini a year later and then onto World Supersport in 2022 with Aruba.it Racing Ducati.
Interestingly, that World Supersport move shares similarities with his upcoming MotoGP switch. Back then, he arrived in the first season of the 'Next Generation' regulations that allowed bikes like the Panigale V2 to compete. Now, he will be part of a new era for MotoGP with 850cc machinery and Pirelli tyres from 2027.
Over the past five seasons, Bulega has forged strong ties with Ducati. Moving to WorldSBK in 2024, he is even set to clinch the world title this season. His involvement in developing the Bologna factory's 850cc bike this year is a testament to the trust placed in him. But beneath it all, there is a long history that makes his return to VR46 feel deeply personal.
"Making it to MotoGP is a dream, because I will make my debut with the Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team," said Bulega. "I chose this team because I've always been linked to them: I was in the VR46 Riders Academy when I was a child, so I know everyone very well."
"Making this step with people I know is easier from a human perspective. They are all extremely professional. When I started racing, I had the dream of arriving in MotoGP. Then, for many reasons, my career took a different path. I moved to WorldSBK, where I focused on building a successful career."
"These years have gone far beyond my expectations, so we thought about making this step up to the premier class. I'm happy to reach this goal, even if it took me a little longer and I did a different journey compared to the usual one. It's amazing and I'm very proud. Now, I don't want to set any goals, I want to try to do well, take it one race at a time, especially at the beginning, and do the best job possible," he added.
With full support from Ducati Corse and Aruba, Bulega is ready to write a new chapter in his career. The blend of emotional closeness with VR46 and technical backing from the Italian manufacturer could be a solid foundation for his premier class debut.
