Ferrari driver Millroy, who suffered a horrific crash in the China GT season opener at Shanghai, is facing a tough reality after a CT scan revealed a small fracture in his neck. The injury was discovered a week after the incident that left him hospitalized in intensive care.
The crash occurred when Millroy's FIST Team AAI Ferrari 296 GT3 was struck by David Chen's Harmony Racing Ferrari. Chen had been battling with Neil Verhagen's TBC by 610 Racing BMW M6, leading to a collision that sent both cars sliding through the grass approaching the hairpin. Millroy was knocked unconscious and had to be pulled from his car by Phantom Global Racing driver Loek Hartog, who has since been hailed a hero.
In a statement on Instagram, Millroy revealed that he was initially diagnosed with six broken ribs, a broken collarbone, a broken hand, and a punctured lung. However, a more detailed CT scan uncovered a small neck fracture that will not require surgery but will need careful rehabilitation and physio. "This won't require surgery, but will require careful rehabilitation and physio going forwards," he said.
Millroy also underwent a four-hour surgery on Sunday to have plates installed. Despite this, he has taken his first steps in the hospital. "I did my first lap today since the crash, albeit around the hospital ward," he wrote. He thanked the medical team in Shanghai for helping him get moving again, noting that even the Chinese government sent top doctors to assess him.
However, his right lung remains a concern. There is a leak of gas and fluid into his chest, requiring a drainage pump. "We are playing the waiting game now. The hole in my right lung is still leaking gas and fluid into my chest so I have a drainage pump fitted to remove this," he explained. His oxygen levels have stabilised in the last 12 hours, showing a nice improvement.
Psychologically, Millroy admitted he is in a strange place. "Despite the pain, the frustration, missing my children and friends back home and the knock-on effect this will have with my racing for the rest of the year etc, I feel incredibly lucky to be here, even without any life-changing injuries," he said. He is sure this one will haunt him for a while, but the messages of love and support have made a huge difference for him and his family.
The incident has also sparked controversy among China GT competitors. Several participants withdrew in protest over the response to the accident, with claims of a slow reaction from trackside marshals. CCTV footage has since been released, offering a detailed timeline of the accident, but no official statement has been made by the organisers regarding the claims.
For Millroy, the focus is now on recovery. Although his racing season is over early, he is determined to make a full comeback. The outpouring of support from fans and colleagues continues to give him strength to get through this difficult time. His story serves as a reminder of the ever-present risks in motorsport, while also highlighting the strong solidarity among drivers.
