New MotoGP 2027 Format: Separate Qualifying Sessions for Sprint

The Grand Prix Commission has officially confirmed a major restructuring of the MotoGP weekend format starting from the 2027 season. Reported by Motosan.es, one of the most relevant updates introduces a dedicated, independent qualifying session exclusively for the Sprint race, completely separate from Sunday's main Grand Prix grid-deciding session. This strategic change forces riders to fight for starting positions across two different moments of the weekend.

The extensive overhaul also redistributes practice schedules. Friday will feature two practice sessions followed by the brand-new Sprint qualifying, while Saturday kicks off with a shorter FP3 ahead of the main Grand Prix qualifying. Additionally, the traditional Sunday morning ten-minute Warm Up session has been completely eliminated from the schedule.

Track activity on Friday begins with a 45-minute FP1 followed by a 30-minute FP2, with all riders participating in both sessions. The major highlight arrives afterward with a 15-minute Sprint qualifying session, featuring the entire grid on equal footing to directly determine the starting positions for Saturday's short race.

Saturday morning opens with a 20-minute FP3, a notably shorter session than current standards. It is immediately followed by the Grand Prix qualifying split into two phases: Q1 lasting 15 minutes with all riders, and Q2 featuring the twelve fastest riders battling for pole position and the prime spots on Sunday's grid, while the Saturday afternoon Sprint uses Friday's standalone grid.

This fundamental shift breaks away from the single-qualifying system used since Sprint races were introduced to the championship in 2023. From 2027 onward, a strong performance on Friday can secure a front-row start for the Sprint without having any direct influence over a rider's starting slot for Sunday's main Grand Prix.
