A warm morning start at the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace quickly descended into a torrential washout during Formula 1 qualifying for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, forcing drivers to tackle some of the wettest conditions of their entire racing careers. The heavy downpour triggered a lengthy one-hour and 23-minute red flag delay that initially sparked fears of a Sunday morning qualifying postponement reminiscent of previous years.
Relief finally arrived when a break in the heavy cloud cover allowed safety car driver Bernd Maylander to evaluate the standing water and give the green light for the session to resume. Teams were immediately forced to bolt on Pirelli's rarely-seen full-wet blue-walled tyres, engineered to disperse massive amounts of water per second despite the persistent threat of dangerous aquaplaning across the historic Brazilian circuit.
While the extreme wet tyres successfully cut through deep puddles, their massive water displacement created an intense wall of spray that severely compromised visibility for trailing cars. Braking zones shifted dramatically, requiring drivers to recalibrate their traditional reference points as stopping distances increased significantly under the treacherous low-grip circumstances.

Williams driver Carlos Sainz admitted that race control made a very bold call to restart the session while the track was still heavily soaked. "It felt a bit punchy when we left on the extreme wets because we were aquaplaning in sixth and seventh gear down the straights, and if you lose the car at those speeds, it's always going to be a big one," Sainz reflected after climbing out of his cockpit.
Despite complaints about near-zero visibility when running closely behind rivals, the field quickly settled into a rhythm once the initial laps cleared away surface water. The dramatic session underscored the immense technical challenges of wet-weather racing and the fine margin between disaster and glory in high-speed motorsport.
