MotoGP is considering a radical move: introducing a transfer window similar to football's transfer market. The idea emerges as a response to concerns that rider contracts for the following season are often finalized too early, shifting public attention from on-track action to off-track negotiations.
According to a report cited from FormulaPassion, the proposal was discussed during an IRTA board meeting on Friday morning in the Silverstone paddock. Attendees included team representatives, IRTA officials, and MotoGP Sporting Director Carlos Ezpeleta. The primary goal is to establish regulations limiting when teams and riders can officially announce agreements.
The proposal suggests setting a specific period within the season as the only window for teams to confirm their rider line-ups. Contracts signed outside that window would be considered invalid. This system aims to concentrate all transfer activity into a short timeframe, reducing prolonged speculation.
The issue became evident early in the 2025 season when most of the 2027 grid was already decided by January. Names like Fabio Quartararo, Francesco Bagnaia, and Jorge Martin were confirmed to switch teams long before the first race. This phenomenon has led fans to focus more on the drama off the track than the competition on it.
The proposal has drawn mixed reactions from teams. Yamaha is reportedly in full support, viewing it as positive for the sport's health. In contrast, Ducati is said to be skeptical, fearing the system could be too rigid and limit negotiation flexibility.
