The idea of changing the MotoGP format for the 2027 season is gaining traction. According to Motorsport, there is a proposal to add a second qualifying session in a race weekend, mimicking the Formula 1 model: one for the Sprint and one for the grand prix. Not only that, the number of qualifying segments could also increase from two to three, with the addition of Q3 and a second elimination round. The proposal has been discussed among the championship organizer, teams, and manufacturers, and reportedly received favorably by most of them. If realized, this would be a major shift in the MotoGP landscape.
New Format, Packed Schedule
Assuming 22 races remain as per the original 2026 calendar, the consequence is clear: MotoGP riders would face 44 starts and 44 qualifying sessions. An incredibly dense number, especially considering the rise in injuries since the introduction of the Sprint and how rare it is to have all full-time riders on track. If this format is implemented, every weekend will become an even greater physical and mental test. There is no clarity yet on the exact format, but the Sprint is likely to stay on Saturday afternoon, meaning Sprint qualifying would have to be held earlier, possibly Friday.
Safety First or Show First?
The big question: is this for safety or for show? The danger level in MotoGP is already extreme, and this reform proposal clearly does not point towards improved safety. On the contrary, it means riders will be exposed to even greater risks, injuries, fatigue, and an increasingly draining career. We return to the same point: without a riders' association, the 22 MotoGP protagonists will never have a voice. When will they speak up? Aren't the warning signs throughout 2026 enough? Riders, are you okay with racing in MacelloGP? This change could also affect team dynamics such as Ducati, who would need to manage strategy more carefully.
It will be interesting to see how riders respond. Some may welcome the extra opportunity to showcase speed, but others worry about the physical toll. Ultimately, the decision rests with the organizer and teams. We'll wait for further developments.
