The premier class of motorcycle racing is set for a massive shake-up after MotoGP officially announced a major format overhaul for the weekend schedule ahead of the 2027 season. The most striking update introduces an extra qualifying session specifically designed to establish a separate grid order exclusively for the Saturday sprint race.
According to The-Race, series organizers stated that the revised format successfully balances an incredible spectacle for fans and new stakes in each session with well-balanced track time for riders, teams and factories. The changes aim to inject fresh strategic depth into every single day of the Grand Prix weekend.
Under the current system, Friday's hour-long afternoon practice counts directly towards automatic Q2 participation for the top 10 fastest riders, with the remaining two spots decided in Saturday morning's Q1. However, the Friday order will now be separated entirely from Q1 and Q2 for the grand prix, serving solely to form the sprint grid.

This major shift formalizes the splitting of the traditional hour-long practice session into a 30-minute 'Free Practice 2' followed by a brand-new 15-minute sprint qualifying session. While this largely mirrors how the current practice plays out, it comes with a 15-minute reduction in overall track time for the competitors.
Further adjustments see Saturday morning's practice session renamed as 'Free Practice 3' and shortened to just 20 minutes instead of the previous 30. The most dramatic modification arrives when all participating riders must enter the Q1 session rather than carrying over Friday times, meaning all 12 coveted Q2 spots will be fiercely contested directly in Q1.
Finally, the traditional 10-minute Sunday morning warm-up session has been entirely eliminated from the grand prix schedule. MotoGP has arranged a pre-race compensation following Moto3 and Moto2 action by having the pitlane open for 10 minutes for multiple sighting laps, giving riders a final shakedown opportunity before lights out.
